The Music Shop Opera in Norwalk

The Music Shop will be performed by the Connecticut Opera for children in grades 3 to 12. This performance is free and is a wonderful introduction to the world and art of opera.

Babies and Sign Language

Recent studies have shown that before babies become verbal, they are capable of responding and communicating using sign language.

The Westport Public Library in Westport Connecticut is offering a free Mother Goose Special: Fun With Signing! for babies 23 months and younger along with their caregiver on May 8, 2008. There will be 2 sessions - one at 9:30 am and one at 10:30 am. Reservations are not required - just drop in.

This event will feature Eileen Baker M.E.D. who is a sign language consultant. She will review simple methods of signing with your baby.

Chess Club at the Westport Library

If you are enjoying Spring Break this week in Westport Connecticut, you may be looking for something to do with kids.

The Westport Library is wonderful place to spend an afternoon. Also, the library offers a free Chess Club to grade school age kids. It just so happens that one session is being offered today for kids in Grades K and 1 from 4:00pm to 4:45pm. Just drop in - no registration required, and all skill levels are welcome.

If you can’t make it today’s chess club session at the Westport Library in Westport Connecticut there are two more sessions scheduled for April 2008. Grades 2 and up can attend on Wednesday April 23 and Grades K and 1 have another opportunity on Wednesday April 30. All sessions are held between 4:00pm and 4:45pm.

Mark your calendars now for the big Emerald City Bash at the Westport Public Library in Westport Connecticut on Friday March 14 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The entire family is invited this unique event. The party will include piano entertainment, costume characters and light snacks.

Interestingly, the library will be closed for the general public and open only for the Emerald City Bash. Just stop in, reservations are not required.

The Emerald City Bash is part of the WestportREADS 2008 celebration, and you guessed it, this year’s book is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Here are some the family oriented events that are planned for WestportREADS 2008:

Saturday March 1, 2008 from 12 pm to 4 pm: WestportREADS kickoff featuring an afternoon of family fun. Crafts, activities, films, and special guests will get the celebration under way.
Thursday March 13 at 7 pm: A showing of the film - The Wizard of Oz
Friday March 14, 2008 from 7 pm to 9 pm: The Emerald City Bash
Sunday March 16, 2008 at 2 pm: Family Book Discussion of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz for elementary school age children and up with their families
Monday March 17, 2008 at 7:30 pm: The Staples Players, the Staples High School Acting Group, will perform scenes from the musical The Wiz

This Saturday, January 19th, Steve Roslonek of SteveSongs will be performing at the Westport Public Library in Westport, Connecticut.

Imagine 2108 at the Westport Library

The Westport Library in Westport, Connecticut is holding it’s 100th year celebration. To help celebrate this event, children are invited to join the Imagine 2108 project. Interested kids in grades K to 12 can prepare a power point presentation that represents what they think a library will look like and offer in the year 2108 (100 years from now).

Children can use their creative thinking to imagine what the building will look like, what services the library will offer, the technology that will be in place, and any other aspect that may be part of a future library.

Projects are limited to 3 slides per person or a total of 10 slides for a project created by a group of 4 or more children.

The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2008. All of the submitted presentations will be combined into one presentation and shown at the Westport Library beginning on April 6, 2008.
