Looking for something to do over Memorial Day weekend with the kids? The Weston Memorial Day Fair may just be the answer.

Taking place at the Hurlbutt Elementary School in Weston Connecticut on Saturday May 24 to Monday May 26, 2008, the Weston Memorial Day Fair has something for everyone. There will be rides, games, and lots of eats! Hours of operation are 12:00pm to 9:00pm on Saturday and Sunday and 12:00pm to 5:00pm on Monday.

While admission is free, you must purchase ride tickets for each attraction.

Managing Your Food Allergies: A Seminar for Teens and Young Adults

This event will take place on Tuesday May 13, 2008 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Weston Public Library at 56 Northfield Road in Weston Connecticut.

Medical experts including Scott H. Sicherer M.D. of the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY and a panel of speakers will discuss living and coping with food allergies. Admission is free. Recent studies have shown that before babies become verbal, they are capable of responding and communicating using sign language.

The Westport Public Library in Westport Connecticut is offering a free Mother Goose Special: Fun With Signing! for babies 23 months and younger along with their caregiver on May 8, 2008. There will be 2 sessions - one at 9:30 am and one at 10:30 am. Reservations are not required - just drop in.

This event will feature Eileen Baker M.E.D. who is a sign language consultant. She will review simple methods of signing with your baby.

The extremely talented Staples Players in Westport Connecticut present their latest musical - Romeo & Juliet.

Opening night is tonight - April 25 at 7:30 pm with additional performances tomorrow April 26 at 7:30pm and a matinee on Sunday April 27 at 2:00pm. There will also be performances on Thursday May 1, Friday May 2, and Saturday May 3 all at 7:30 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the Staples Players website and any remaining seats will be sold at the door on the night of the performances. Space is limited and tickets cos t $15 for adults and $10 for students.

Because of mature content children under 10 are not permitted to attend.

Pinkalicious Fundraiser for the Komen Foundation

A group of Westport Connecticut area parents have teamed up to bring Pinkalicious - The Musical to town. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Susan G. Komen for The Cure foundation to aid breast cancer research.

The performance promises an afternoon of entertainment for all ages. Following the show there will be opportunities to meet the performers, do face painting, arts and crafts, and more festivities.

The event will take place on May 3, 2008 at 2:30 pm at the Ludlowe Middle School in Fairfield Connecticut. Tickets are available at www.komenct.org for $25 each. Additional contributions are welcome. It’s that time of the year again…time for the premier culinary event of the year–Fairfield County Eats! (formerly known as Taste of the Nation).

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Fairfield County Eats! puts together a benefit every year at the Italian Center in Stamford that benefits the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County (actually, 100% of our proceeds go to the Food Bank, which is almost unheard of!). It is a culinary event featuring over 40 of the areas finest chefs, restaurants and purveyors.

Tickets are $75 each (group discounts are available), of which $50 is tax deductible! It is being held on May 6, 2008 from 6 pm to 9 pm, plenty of time to eat & drink to your heart’s content!

Parents of young musicians in Westport Connecticut are welcome to attend the Norwalk Youth Symphony annual open house on Saturday April 26 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The Norwalk Youth Symphony is comprised of children in grades 4 to 12. During the open house, parents can attend a rehearsal, ask questions, and take a guided tour.

The Open House will take place at the Norwalk Concert Hall at 125 East Avenue in Norwalk Connecticut.

Hansel & Gretel Opera - Free Concert

What a treat! The Boston Lyric Opera Company will perform the Hansel and Gretel Opera as part of the Free Young Person’s Concert Series tomorrow April 19, 2008.

The performances will take place at the Trinity Church at 651 Pequot Ave in Southport which is close to Westport Connecticut. Showtimes are at 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm.

I did mention that this concert is FREE and is recommended for kids ages 5 to 17.

This is a wonderful introduction for children into the world of opera as most children are already familiar with this classic fairy tale and will be able to follow along.

This excellent concert is brought to us by Music for Youth, Inc. which is a non-profit organization that’s mission is to spread a love and understanding of classical music amongst today’s youth and the Pequot Library. And it is natural that a performance of this caliber would be underwritten by the New England Foundation for the Arts and Westport Connecticut’s own Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.

Summertime is usually when we all kick back and relax. Many parents in Westport Connecticut send their children off to day camps and sleep away camps that emphasize sports and the great outdoors.

However, if you are looking for an alternative or a supplement to all of that fun in the sun, Fairfield University is offering reading skills classes and speed reading classes for children and adults. These classes meet once a week for a month and are for children age 4 and up.

This is a nice opportunity for children to brush up on their reading skills and offers a little break from the summer norm.
